Our first week in France as we explore Val de Loire, using free aires and ACSI campsites. We get to grips with life in our motorhome, life on the road and life without the stresses of work.
We leave France to cross the Pyrenees at Pierre St Martin, and explore Spanish villages along the border between the Basque Country and Aragon.
We spend a week at Camping Ampolla Playa, on the southern part of Costa Durada, enjoying the wildlife at the Delta de l'Ebre: egrets, herons, glossy ibis and of course, flamingos.
This week we leave the mosquitos on the delta and head north to the Sierra de Roquerole. We spend 2 nights on the UNESCO site of Poblet Monastery in the carpark, visit Montblanc to see exactly where St. George slayed 'the' dragon before finding a free aire in nearby Tarres, with all services (including EHU and WiFi) for free too. With great hiking trails in the hills, this area is a peaceful and beautiful area to spend a few days and nights.
In this week's video we show you the great free aires we have found in Catalonia, Spain, using park4night, some even with free electricity and WiFi. Each aire has enabled us to visit fabulous locations such as Sebes Nature Reserve, Flix Castle and the UNESCO rock art at El Cogul creating more memories for us on our maiden European trip in our Elddis/Compass 155 MH.
This week we try out a paid for camper area on the side of a motorway, get jobs done so we are ready to go back to the Pyrenees area and head northwest across Catalonia. We find more free parkups in fantastic locations, spend a relaxing few days on a campsite before finding a non-snowy route back over the mountains into France.
Join us as we explore the French side of Catalonia, around the Pyrenees Orientales, taking in mountain villages, unusual geological features and visiting another UNESCO site, before heading up to Narbonne as we start to feel festive. We finish this week at Carcassonne Cite, another UNESCO site, and one we've been waiting to see for many years.
Our last 10 days heading home for Christmas as we work our way north through France from Carcassonne to Calais, taking in beautiful towns and cities along the way. We've enjoyed seeing how France prepares for Christmas, made our MH feel a little more Christmassy and felt the chillier weather set in the further north we get.
In this video we breakdown the costs for our first 8-week trip to France and Spain in a Compass/Elddis 155 motorhome, covering the costs of fuel, food, camping, sightseeing, vets and Eurotunnel crossing. We know everyone enjoys travelling in different ways and prioritises spending money on different thing: this is our way and we hope it helps you to plan your trip.
